Olympians of Karpathos | Moodboard
The moodboard draws inspiration from Olympos of Karpathos.
According to a local myth, the first inhabitants of the island loved their home so much that kidnapped the Olympian Gods from Mount Olympus and brought them to live with them to the highest mountain of Karpathos, named Olympus after them. Therefore they were called Arpathei (those who took the Gods), a name which was later turned into Karpathei and Karpathii; and as a result the island was named Karpathos.
In antiquity in the island of Karpathos there was the Doric city Vrykous that was kept until the 7th or 8th century A.C.
Then the residents sought refuge in more mountainous areas on account of Saracen pirates. The refugees from Vrykous founded the village Olympos possibly in those years. Olympos was named after the mountain where it is built. The name of the village is feminine (Η Όλυμπος) contrary to the name of the mountain that is masculine (Ό Όλυμπος). The name Elympos is used, mainly by local villagers. The villagers of Olympos have kept the local dialect and the traditional costume due to the isolation of this place from the rest of Karpathos since recent times.
