Flowers included in a decorative tapestry, symbolize love, passion, beauty, blooming, trust and healing and is infused by Hanakotoba (花言葉), the ancient Japanese art of assigning meanings to flowers into Greek folk culture by choosing collection names from this practice. The language of flowers, is a means of mystical communication which conveys emotions and messages directly to the recipient or viewer without needing the use of words. Meanings have been attributed to flowers for thousands of years and some form of floriography has been practised in traditional cultures throughout the world.

POSTFOLK is a digital handicraft, a digital embroidery, inspired by the design potential of folk art motifs designed by Maria Olga Vlachou. These motifs have formed part of the graphical lexicon of traditional Greek culture for many generations, but are now an object of mostly curatorial or antiquarian interest. POSTFOLK wants to unlock the potential that these wonderful figures have for contemporary design by dislodging or dislocating the motifs from the aesthetic conventions that once defined them in order to render them afresh. It seeks to infuse these motifs with vibrant new colors in a bold palette and to arrange these elements in new ways.

Maria Olga Vlachou is an award-winning Art Director and entrepreneur, born and raised in Athens, Greece. After working for many years as a Senior Art Director elevating luxury brands and business through strategic design and collaborative partnerships, she created the POSTFOLK heritage brand inspired by the Greek folk traditional embroidery art and turned it dot by dot into a unique invention. Maria Olga was inspired by her beloved grandmother who used to stitch embroidery which had meaning to bring joy, love, euphoria, abundance, and well-being in everyday life and so she created textile collections to express these meanings and to support our traditional past in modern art design.
