Venus, the ancient Greek goddess of love, was the undisputed model of female beauty. The Venus de Milo bust was inspired by the 150 BC masterpiece Aphrodite of Milos (Venus de Milo).
The Venus de Milo, also known as the Aphrodite of Milos, is one of the most iconic masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture. Although it was once attributed to the sculptor Praxiteles based on an inscription found on its base, it is now generally believed to have been created by Alexandros of Antioch. Dating to around 130–100 BC, the statue is widely thought to represent Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty in Greek mythology.
Carved from marble and standing slightly taller than life at approximately 203 cm, the sculpture is notable for its elegant proportions and timeless beauty. Parts of the statue, including one arm and its original base, were lost after its discovery. Today, it is permanently exhibited at the Louvre Museum and takes its name from the Greek island of Milos, where it was originally found.
