The Greek Carnival is special and unique because customs date back to the pagan world of ancient Greece. During ancient times, there were celebrations at this time of year to commemorate the end of winter and the coming of spring which were associated with the worship of Dionysus, the God of Wine, Feast and Theatre.
Today Greek Carnival has its roots in the oldest ‘Dionysian celebrations’ of the Greeks, where people disguised, danced, sang drinking wine and spirits reached its peak in honor of Dionysus.
His festivals were the driving force behind the development of Greek theatre, where a way to disguise was the use of masks; the smiling and frowning faces Drama Masks: Thalia + Melpomene.
