The design is inspired by a permanent and alternating exhibition of the Greek art of 19-20th c., with material and geometric spatial indexes for the gaze that give the sense of free choice to the movement of the visitors (panels facing the incoming visitor permitting the maximum depth of the field of view), in a continuous open-air feeling due to the general indirect lighting that follows the incoming view of the excerpts of the city. Minimalism and materials that are subdued to highlight the works of art.

POLYGON HOUSE Ioannis Panagiotou | Bronze A’ Design Award Winner in 2021 – 2022 Architecture, Building and Structure Design Category.

The idea was based on the division of the building volumes and its opening to the sea, in a way determined by the natural lines of the ground, without the absolute correlation of the construction corners, creating a complex polygon in plan view. The layout of the building volumes seems random, but it is not. They are placed so that each area of the house has an unobstructed view of the sea from wherever the observer stand.

Referring mentally to a box of light that opens revealing its content, the roof of the stadium formats a landscape of deveins surfaces that compose a continuous front on the eastern boundary of the square; the two volumes of the shopping center frame the other sides respectively. The extensive use of glass and metal shows off an airy architecture that functions as a floodlit object during the night; here, the unpredictable refractions of natural and artificial light on the crystalline forms create a glowing drop-scene which invites you to observe it.

The project was inspired by the so called Aleorion of Xerxes, built around 480 BC and once stood on the reef Lefteris located off the coast of the Pelion peninsula in the Aegean Sea, Greece. It is considered as the most ancient maritime safety structure in the world, built 250 years before the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Dolomite stones, used for the construction of the lighthouse were placed on top of each other forming a tower that functioned as a warning sign of the reef and the nearby very shallow waters.
