Under the summer sun of Andros island, a young English tourist, Annabel, meets a shepherd and a sincere, innocent love is born. The cult movie Girls in the Sun [Κορίτσια στον Ήλιο, 1968] directed by Vasilis Georgiadis was nominated as Foreign Film – Foreign Language Film in Golden Globe Awards and won three awards in Thessaloniki Film Festival .
The features of the film are still kept in memory; from the music and the scenery, to the grecian chic style of Annabel. The ancient greek chiton ornamented with Greek Key patterns has been incorporated in style and fashion dictating the 60s era in a mini dress. The reductive simplicity as a way of conveying an aura of the antique has been evoked in the dress by the application of patterns and designs from the repertoire of ancient ornament, as well as by referencing the various attributes of the Olympian deities.
Highlighting the pure white dress, sandals and the tagari bag – a small woollen or knitted handmade bag used by peasants across the Greek country side – keep up with the late 60s ‘hippies movement’ in Greece.
