Mary Katrantzou: de-codes Mycenaean figure

In exploring the cultural signature of her Hellenic heritage, Mary Katrantzou was drawn into the archives, digging through her creative past to establish her own cannon of classics. Mycenaean pottery patterns and frescoes are used to decorate garments in New Classical SS17.

The Mycenaeans were influenced by the earlier Minoan civilization. Architecture, art and religious practices were assimilated and adapted to better express the perhaps more militaristic and austere Mycenaean culture.

The chariot was an important motif in art from the Greek mainland; its frequency on Mycenaean pictorial vases has characterized an entire subgroup.

Mycenaean fresco scenes often show ritual action, but with schematic drawing techniques. Figures of Mycenaean women appear regularly on frescoes, even as charioteers. The presence of women in religious processions as well as hunts is a sign of their elevated status in the Mycenaean world.
