Nike of Samothrace – Winged Victory – exposed in Louvre Museum. Originally was sculpted on a monument overlooking the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, in Samothrace.
Up on a hill, overlooking the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, the grandiose statue of Nike of Samothrace originally stood on the marble bow of a sculpted warship, a monument that commemorated a naval victory. A reflecting pool created the illusion that the warship was sailing out of its rectangular base while a misting fountain simulated sea spray.
Made of Parian marble, the Nike of Samothrace is an excellent example of the expressive, Hellenistic style defined by drama and theatricality. The Nike is designed to seem as if she is just landing in a fierce headwind, her great wings aloft.
The Winged Nike‘s body twists slightly as if to maintain its balance, while the draped garments are masterfully depicted as if rippling in a strong sea breeze.
The lively drapery, twisting pose and dramatic setting create a dynamic composition that adds a lifelike quality to the statue that helps the historical narrative and clearly tells a story.
Samothrace, the mystic Greek island in northeast Aegean, is blessed with fabulous nature and rich cultural heritage. Stunning waterfalls, thermal springs, mountainous paths through lush vegetation synthesize the unique landscape under the highest peak of Mount Saos, named Fengari (Moon).
In this pristine natural setting, mysterious religious rituals took place in Ancient Greece, during the Hellenistic period, at the Sanctuary of the Great Gods.
Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory tells the story of spiritual victory; her image is prominent throughout Greek art symbolising the arête (physical and moral excellence) of gods and men.
The sculpture of Winged Victory of Samothrace, was created in 2nd century BC. Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world, as ‘the greatest masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture’. Repatriation of the statue is requested through campaigns, until our days.
